Which penny loafer is right for you?

Which penny loafer is right for you?

We often get questions about our penny loafer shoes. People invariably want to know the differences between our various models and buy something that really suits their needs.

G.H. Bass & Co. is fully committed to providing quality designer shoes. Here, we guide you through how to find the perfect penny loafer from our footwear selection.

Classic Penny Loafers

The classic penny loafer from G. H. Bass & Co. is an iconic, stylish shoe that is consistently one of our top sellers. These are hand-stitched and made using our tubular moccasin construction technique. G. H. Bass & Co. has been pioneering on our iconic Weejuns penny loafer since 1936.

Classic penny loafers have a heritage style and profile, and we take this original manufacturing technique and infuse modern technology. The process sees a single piece of leather wrapped around a mould. This creates something of a hammock effect, with the leather gently holding the shape that has been created and fitting snugly around the foot.

The midsole is blake stitched to the tubular moccasin, before the outsole is stitched to the midsole using a welt stitch. This enables the outsole to take the desired shape.

We also add additional internal cushioning for extra levels of comfort, which starts in the cavity in the forepart of the midsole. Here we introduce dual density foam. We also add in a foam footbed with energy return heel pad.

What’s more, the classic penny loafer comes with a leather sole which can be resoled without losing profile. This is appealing to many fans of vintage shoes, although these shoes cannot get wet – worth knowing depending on where you are considering wearing them.

This means that all things considered, these shoes are not only the most iconic leather sole loafer out there, but also the most comfortable.

Easy Weejuns

Easy Weejuns are also made using the tubular moccasin construction technique, which features across all our penny loafer lines. Easy Weejuns include a small internal spring cushioning that sits beneath the ball of the foot. They also have energy release pads for extra comfort, and include a rubber sole that is the same thickness as leather sole penny loafers.

What makes these shoes stand out? They are more water resistant and versatile than the classic penny loafer. The rubber sole also makes the Easy Weejun a good option for anybody buying on a budget.

Though rubber soles cannot be resoled, these shoes still offer several years of wear. This collection also contains more experimental fabrics and detailing, including suede Easy Weejun designs.

Weejun 90s

The Weejun 90s penny loafer was first introduced to the G. H. Bass & Co. collection in 2019 and has quickly become a modern classic. Why? We find people love wearing them because they are super versatile.

They feature a chunky EVA lug sole, with tubular moccasin construction used for the rest of the shoe. These are incredibly light and comfortable on the feet, with a spongy, durable sole that also delivers a slight bounce. The classic uppers add a finishing touch, while the Weejun 90s’ interesting colours deliver a cooler profile.

These are one of our fastest growing categories, bringing together modern and classic motifs to quickly become a customer favourite.
